WIRBALIT® Tungsten / tungsten copper / tungsten heavy metals

Tungsten is a very hard and brittle material. The most important properties include a very high melting point, a low vapor pressure and the highest hardness and strength of all metals. In addition to the very high density and heat resistance, tungsten has very good electrical and thermal conductivities. Tungsten has good corrosion resistance against most acids and alkalis.

Tungsten electrodes are used for welding processes, e.g. in resistance welding; especially when materials such as copper, bronze or brass are to be welded.

Tungsten (pure)

Tungsten is the metal with the highest melting point of all metals (3420 °C) at a very high specific weight and is characterized above all by its dimensional stability at high temperatures. Tungsten is mainly used in incandescent filaments or electron tubes. Tungsten filaments or boats are used in vapor deposition technology.

Tungsen copper

Tungsten copper materials combine the specific properties of both metals, which are specifically influenced by the respective mixing ratio. Tungsten contributes to high hardness and heat resistance in copper-tungsten materials. Copper gives this material good electrical conductivity and a positive effect on mechanical processing. Tungsten copper is used e.g. for eroding electrodes, electrical contacts, medium and high voltage breakers (SF6), welding electrodes (contact / resistance welding).

Tungsten heavy metals

Tungsten heavy metals are composite materials with a high proportion of tungsten and a nickel-iron or non-magnetic nickel-copper binder phase. The standard products contain between 90% and 95% tungsten, depending on the required change in properties. Because of its high density, it is used where large masses are required in a small space; both in the static and dynamic range.
